How it works

How Word Holder works

Read what you like. Tap what you don't know. Word Holder remembers it for you — and brings it back until it sticks.

  1. Bring something to read — an article link, pasted text, or one of our sample readings.
  2. Tap a word you don't know — the meaning appears in place, and the word is saved for you.
  3. Review it when it comes due — a short daily session, scheduled by spaced repetition.
  4. Quiz yourself — on sentences from your own reading.

Shown below in Italian. It works the same in every supported language:

1 · Bring something to read

Paste a link or the text itself, or pick one of our sample readings. It opens in the reader.

Paste an article link into the import field and press Import: the article opens in the Word Holder reader, ready to tap.

2 · Tap a word. Keep reading.

Open an Italian reading, tap a word to see its meaning, and Word Holder saves it for spaced-repetition review.

3 · Review it when it comes due.

Word Holder turns the saved word into a review card: recall the word from context, reveal the answer, then choose how well you knew it.

4 · Quiz yourself on your own sentences.

Quizzes are built from the sentences you actually read. Put each word back where it belongs.

A sentence quiz shows “Era completamente invaghito di lei dal primo incontro.” with “invaghito” removed and a bank of your words to choose from. Place the right word and check your answer.

Also good to know

  • No text at hand? Type a word — it lands in the same notebook and comes back for review the same way.
  • Everything works without an account. Sign up when you want your words on another device.
  • Reviews are scheduled by an SM-2-based scheduler — the same family that powered Anki — so each word comes back right before you forget it.
  • Reading on your phone or in Chrome? The same lookup works there too — every word you tap goes into one notebook.

Start reading. We'll remember the words for you.
